Welcome

This blog will be used to support the IB PYP workshop Making the PYP Happen in the Classroom at ASB in January 2015.

We hope you will find the information in the blog posts useful and that you will join our learning community by adding your comments and reflections.

In the 2 days of this workshop we will be looking at 3 big questions:

  • Why? - this is the philosophy behind the PYP
  • What? - this is the theory behind the curriculum.  We will be looking at the written and the assessed curriculum.
  • How? - this is our practice and how we bring the curriculum alive.  We will be looking at planning for inquiry, teaching and learning.

Transdisciplinary Theme:  How We Organize Ourselves
Central Idea:  The PYP is a philosophy and curriculum framework for an international education
Lines of Inquiry:
  • the essential elements of an international curriculum
  • inquiry as a stance
  • teaching and learning of the whole child
  • planning and assessing to inform and transform teaching
Key Concepts:  form, function, causation

Summative Assessment:  Consider an upcoming unit of inquiry.  Develop a summative assessment task that caters for the learning of all students (i.e. should involve differentiation) and demonstrates the engagement with the unit through the 5 essential elements.

Session 1: Creating a Community of Learners


Individual teachers' beliefs about the experiences related to teaching and learning impact on the way they teach.


Aim: Reflect on own beliefs and practices within a community of learners
No learning occurs in a vacuum We construct meaning personally and uniquely, building on our prior knowledge, feelings and engaging within the context of our current learning environment.

We will be using the Concentric Circle Model to explore our own beliefs and values and to discuss commonalities for the group.


How will we know what we have learned?
Commonalities from the fireside groups:

  • How to create a meaningful lesson, which is versatile to different needs - that develops a deeper understanding of the unit of inquiry.
  • Confidently explain the PYP to others.
  • Understand PYP better, and different teaching strategies within the framework.
  • How is PYP able to truly support student dreams and allow time for student driven inquiry, especially in the Early Years
  • To make connections with the programme, other teachers and students in order to aid in teaching and learning.

This session will also give you a brief introduction to the IB and its history. You will be able to highlight the links between the various aspects of the PYP on the diagram as we cover them.



Finally in this session we will be establishing essential agreements for the workshop using the PYP attitudes. These are the dispositions which are expressions of fundamental values, beliefs and feelings about learning, the environment and people.

Our Essential Agreements:
  • Independence:  We will feel confident to speak our ideas, listen to others, and discuss these ideas cooperatively in a safe environment.
  • Enthusiasm:  We agree to actively engage in all learning.  We will cultivate our passion and curiosity and ... have fun!!!
  • Curiosity:  We will be interested about what we are learning and not shy away from not knowing.
  • Commitment:  We will be present by thinking, asking, listening, sharing and sticking with "it".
  • Respect:  We will be open and supportive and avoid being judgemental for how others express their ideas and understandings.

Session 2: International Mindedness and the Learner Profile

International mindedness is encompassed in the IB Learner Profile.  It is further developed by practices under the PYP standards.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

What, then, is a PYP school? It is a school that, regardless of location, size or constitution, strives towards developing an internationally minded person. What is an internationally minded person? It is a person who demonstrates the attributes of the IB learner profile.
This is the kind of student we hope will graduate from a PYP school, the kind of student who, in the struggle to establish a personal set of values, will be laying the foundation upon which international-mindedness will develop and flourish.
The school promotes international-mindedness on the part of the adults and the students in the school community.
The school provides students with opportunities for learning about issues that have local, national and global significance, leading to an understanding of human commonalities.
To summarize, when seeking evidence of international-mindedness in PYP schools, teachers need to look at what the students are learning, how they are demonstrating that learning, and how to nurture students within the school community. They need to consider whether students are making connections between life in school, life at home and life in the world. By helping students make these connections and see that learning is connected to life, a strong foundation for future learning is established. In striving to make it happen, and in looking for indicators of success, teachers, principals and/or heads of schools need to look everywhere, since all aspects of the school, from overarching philosophy through to policies and their ensuing practices, will reflect either the presence or the absence of a sensitivity to the special nature of PYP schools.

Session 5: Knowledge, Concepts, Skills and Action

The PYP curriculum is concept-driven and transdisciplinary



Knowledge is reflected in the Transdisciplinary Themes and Scope and Sequences. Knowledge is the significant, relevant subject matter we wish the students to explore and know about. The construction of knowledge requires skills.

Session 7: Inquiry

An inquiry process allows students to revisit and revise prior knowledge in the light of new experiences in order to extend their learning






What is the connection between questions and inquiry?
The PYP recognises many different forms of inquiry based on children's genuine curiosity and on their needing and wanting to know about the world.  It is most successful when the questions are honest and have real significance in moving them to new levels of knowledge and understanding.  The most penetrating questions, ones most likely to move the child's understanding further, arise from existing knowledge.  (From A Basis for Practice)

During this session we will be defining what inquiry is:
  • Inquiry provokes curiosity that leads to open-ended questions and student driven exploration, enabling students to gain ownership of their learning.
  • Inquiry is a student driven process based on curiosity, sharing of knowledge, understanding and multiple perspectives.
  • Inquiry empowers learners to build conceptual understanding through actively wondering and exploring.
  • Inquiry = curiosity that inspires self driven investigations that use past experiences to question and create new knowledge.
  • Inquiry is a process of focusing in on or zooming out of conceptual understandings via curiosity, questioning and exploration.

Questions following the workshop



What questions do you still have regarding the PYP Framework?
I'm still wondering how to truly connect the essential elements to the concepts.
Concepts are one of the essential elements.  In the PYP there is a commitment to a concept-driven curriculum as a means of supporting inquiry.  The transdisciplinary units, where concepts support and structure the inquiries, provide a context in which students can understand and at the same time acquire essential knowledge, skills and attitudes.  Concepts help the learner to construct meaning through critical thinking and the transfer of knowledge.
What are best practices of differentiation during U of I time?
Student learning is promoted through planning and refining the teaching and learning process to meet individual or group needs.  Formative assessment provides information that is used to plan the learning.  There is evidence that increased use of formative assessment particularly helps those students who are low achievers to make significant improvements in their understanding.  It is important to identify the needs of each student and to view learning as a continuum, with each student achieving developmental milestones in different but relevant ways.  Student led inquiry will aslo ensure that as student’s voice and choice are built in to the learning.
I am wondering about the vertical alignment of concepts.
In a school year at each grade level (K- 5) all 8 key concepts should be covered.  Periodically the entire programme of inquiry is looked at to ensure vertical alignment.
Understanding how to place a line of inquiry under one or more of the transdisciplinary themes.
Students inquire and learn about globally significant issues in the context of units of inquiry, which may fall under one of the 6 Transdisciplinary Themes. Each unit comprises of central idea and lines of inquiry.
Refer to page 30 in your supplementary workbook for how to write lines of inquiry.
Not questions as much as wanting examples of best practices. Is there a website or a resource with all the work teachers worldwide have done already that we can draw from (besides Atlas)?

How can I fully integrate with a UOI as a specialist teacher?
The PYP is a transdisciplinary programme.  Additionally there are 6 defined subject areas that have value in themselves and provide the students with knowledge and skills to explore the 6 transdisciplinary themes.  It is recognized that the subject areas have an integrity and essence of their own.  Teaching about and through the subject areas is advocated when it enhances the transdisciplinary learning, but not when the integration results in teaching and learning that is contrived and superficial.  The Annex at the back of Making the PYP Happen provides information about the role that each subject area plays in the PYP.  Note that personal and social education is the responsibility of all PYP teachers.
How often do the curriculum get reworked and are assessed through different main concepts.
The Programme of Inquiry gets assess on an ongoing basis. As units finish team reflect on how engaging, relevant and meaningful the units were for the students and accordingly propose changes to Central Ideas, Lines of Inquiry or concepts. These changes are shared with the school to ensure not just horizontal but also vertical alignment. The next step is to then create grade level Curriculum Maps for the school year.
I am wondering about the effectiveness of using rubrics for PYP summative assessment.

I am wondering about different approaches to balance knowledge & conceptual learning in Math instruction.

Summative assessment is the culmination of the teaching and learning process and gives students the opportunities to demonstrate what has been learned.  Teachers gather and record information about learning using a variety of tools, for example rubrics, which contain descriptors of characteristics or signs to look out for.  Rubrics can be developed by students as well as by teachers.  Other examples of tools for assessment are exemplars, checklists, anecdotal records and continuums.

Whenever possible maths should be taught through the units of inquiry, However, IBPYP recognizes that teaching maths through units of inquiry may not always be feasible, in those instances, units of math need to be created using the stand alone PYP planner ensuring that the essential elements are reflected in the units.


I am still wondering how math and language can be taught while working within the framework.
The programme of inquiry provides an authentic context for learners to develop and use language.  Wherever possible, language should be taught through the relevant, authentic context of the units of inquiry.  The teacher should provide language learning opportunities that support learners’ inquiries and the sharing of their learning.  When teachers plan learning experiences that enable learners to develop language within meaningful contexts, learners are able to make connections, apply their learning and transfer their understanding to new situations.  

Links to the transdisciplinary themes should also be made with math, as developing understanding of these links will contribute to students’ understanding of mathematics in the world and to their understanding of the transdisciplinary theme.  The role of inquiry in mathematics is important, however it is recognized that there are occasions when it is preferable for students to be given a series of strategies for learning mathematical skills in order to progress in their mathematical understanding.

What is the 'backward design' exactly and how does it work in regards to the PYP. (I know we touched briefly on it.)
The summative assessment is discussed in Section 1 of the planner, along with the central idea.  Ways of assessing students’ understanding is addressed immediately.  If there is no effective way that students can demonstrate their understanding of the central idea, the central idea will need to be revised before further planning can take place.
There are three stages to backward design:
Stage 1: Identify Desired Results- What do we want to learn
Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence of Learning-How will we know what we’ve learned
Stage 3: Design Learning Experiences & Instruction- How best will we learn
